IHE-based image management – Long-term experience with implementation and operation

Sharing medical data is a crucial part of patient care, to prevent duplicate examinations and speed up the treatment process. Despite the major technical advances in this area, sharing patient data in an intersectoral environment and maintaining full control over the process remain a challenge.

The International Journal of Computer Assisted Radiology and Surgery recently published an empirical paper on the successful implementation of a standardised, data protection-compliant, image distribution system as part of an electronic medical record. This was a specific project of  CHILI GmbH, a subsidiary of NEXUS AG, in which a sharing system was built over the course of 5 years based on easily available IHE profiles using XDS.

The authors of the report come to the following conclusion: “A state-of-the-art sharing system that is used in a live clinical environment has been established and is ready to grow with more partners. The system is the basis for an elaborated interdisciplinary collaboration where data, images in particular, can now be shared between medical professionals.”
